After seeing JoP’s For Science lockscreen, I had to take a crack at a portal themed setup. This is what I came up with.

  4. Posted 2012/03/21 at 11:10 am | Permalink

    @k_un The icons are part of the wallpaper, so I can’t really share the icons. But essentially they’re a combination of Android 4.0 action bar icons (can be found here: and Portal 2 icons, which can be found with a google search!

    Could you by chance make a little tutorial on how to exactly set this up :/

  11. Posted 2012/03/22 at 1:35 pm | Permalink

    I would really appreciate more info and a tutorial. Where can I get the icons/wallpaper?

  12. Posted 2012/03/22 at 5:16 pm | Permalink

    I love it, but AARGGHH, why don’t people share their wallpapers! It’s not that hard!

    Wow, so simple.. yet really interesting. Great job!

  14. Posted 2012/03/22 at 9:01 pm | Permalink

    @SpencerRelly I’ve downloaded all the required apps and fonts…can you explain step by step exactly how you did this? It looks so good and I’d like to have it.

    @gman311 @Bureauwlamp @rezevoar @mikaeltarquin @Nafarious @Hugies145

    So I’ve altered this design a little since uploading it, but the wallpapers have remained basically the same. Only difference is I added some dots to the arrow on the ‘For Science’ slider to make it longer, and got rid of the clock on the homescreen in favor of just making the Aperture Laboratories logo bigger. Anyways, the updated wallpers:
    Homescreen ->
    Lockscreen ->

    As far as the homescreen goes, since the icons are built into the wallpaper, this won’t really work for you unless you have the same app/folder placement as me (unless of course you want to edit the tiles around in photoshop, which you are welcome to do). Other than that, it’s pretty straightforward to set up. In ADW ex, make sure your grid is set to 4X7, your dock is turned off, and that your notifications bar is hidden. I don’t have any idea whether these settings will yield the same effect in the free version of ADW, so keep that it mind. After that, just got to organize your tiles accordingly and then give them a transparent icon (even uploaded mine here: it’s transparent, so just right click in the top left corner until you get the option to save image as).

    The lockscreen is a little more tricky. In widget locker make sure you have a 12X12 grid, no anchors, and that you also hide the notifications bar. For the slider, we need to position an iphone slider over the top of the ‘FOR SCIENCE —>’ and the give it a transparent theme (can be found here: Then, we need to position a Missed It! widget below the phone/sms/email icons (the preferences for mine can be found here: just place the unzipped folder in your presets fodler in MissedIt folder on your sd card and apply it to your widget). Last, we need to make a 4×2 Minimalistic text widget and position/resize next to our running portal man (again, my preferences: place the .mtpref file in your MinimalisticTextPreferences folder and apply it to your widget).

    I think that’s everything. Hopefully that was somewhat clear! Thanks for all the compliments everyone!

    Oh and also, for anyone wondering, the two blank boxes in the top left of the updated wallpaper are for a wifi toggle and a sound toggle on my phone.

  17. Posted 2012/03/23 at 12:00 am | Permalink

    Hi Spencer.
    Thanks for all the explanation, but, what widget size did you use for Missed It! in the lock screen?

  18. Posted 2012/03/23 at 12:03 am | Permalink

    I love this theme! I really wish there was a Black version. Any possiblities on popular request? ;) Also your wallpapers don’t seem to be working for me…. How did you get them on, It wont allow me to put the full image as my background. :(

  19. Posted 2012/03/23 at 1:10 am | Permalink

    @arremmers Yeah I can probably make that happen later today after school!

    Forgot to mention that: to get the wallpaper to fit portrait use the free app ‘Wallpaper Wizardrii’.

  20. Posted 2012/03/23 at 1:52 am | Permalink

    Awesome! Thanks! It worked! So What if instead of invisible folders you came out with an icon pack? That way anyone who wants to use this can organize the homescreen as they want without confusion with the wallpaper? Just an idea for improving an already awesome theme.

  21. Posted 2012/03/23 at 2:01 am | Permalink

    @arremmers No problem! Glad it worked :)

    The only problem I see with that is that with the outlines, the icons are probably bigger than a standard 60×60 icon. Which would be a problem. I’ll have to see though!

  22. Posted 2012/03/23 at 2:02 am | Permalink

    @esturniolo So just make it 4×1 and then resize to fit once it’s on widget locker by long pressing and see if you can get it to work that way!

  23. Posted 2012/03/23 at 2:25 am | Permalink

    Thanks Spencer!

  24. Posted 2012/03/23 at 2:30 am | Permalink

    Got everything up and running, thanks so much for the follow up guide, great work on this theme!

  25. Posted 2012/03/23 at 4:18 am | Permalink

    @arremmers A lot of people on Reddit have asked for black versions of the wallpapers (to save battery life).

    Homescreen ->
    Lockscreen ->

  26. Posted 2012/03/23 at 4:21 am | Permalink

    Thanks for the huge explanation spencer :)

  27. Posted 2012/03/23 at 4:25 am | Permalink

    @Bureauwlamp No problem!

  28. Posted 2012/03/23 at 9:15 am | Permalink

    @SpencerRelly Awesome! Already have it set! Any chances of getting the icons? Or at least experimenting with them?

  29. Posted 2012/03/23 at 9:37 am | Permalink

    @arremmers The icons are just Android 4.0 action bar icons which can be found here ->
    I just stuck them in boxes.

  30. Posted 2012/03/23 at 10:01 am | Permalink

    Well what i meant is make those icons or assorted icons inside a box that you would then put as the application icon then that would make it so your theme is entirely customizable to anyones liking it would make it so the wallpaper simply says “Aperture Laboratories” and then everything else would be black allowing to be customized to users will.

  31. Posted 2012/03/23 at 11:39 am | Permalink

    I am new to all this, is there a video somewhere that will show me how to do it?

  32. Posted 2012/03/23 at 11:50 am | Permalink

    @SpatzST No, there isn’t a video, but there is a fairly detailed tutorial a few comments up! Just ask if you have any further questions after trying it out! :)

  33. Posted 2012/03/23 at 12:22 pm | Permalink

    Thanks for the reply Spencer. I am having a bit of trouble here. I downloaded the homescreen.png but attempting to set it as my background only allows me to select a portion of the picture, meaning I can’t get that picture on just one of my 5 homepages.

    I think this is going to be more trouble than I expected :)

  34. Posted 2012/03/23 at 4:06 pm | Permalink

    @SpatzST Yeah, so if you download the app Wallpaper Wizardrii from the market place, it will allow you to set a wallpaper portrait wise with no scroll.

  35. Posted 2012/03/23 at 11:31 pm | Permalink

    Hey there, just a quick question, I am having trouble getting the theme for the slider, I am not really sure where to put it, I got a Galaxy Nexus, but I don’t see any folders for MissedIt for MinimalisticText or for the WidgetLocker, any help would be great.

    Also is it possible to only have the wallpaper on the main screen, but not in the app drawer?

  36. Posted 2012/03/24 at 1:03 am | Permalink

    @kaptawesome It will be on your sd card and then data/com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker (or something like that ha) then you should see a data themes folder and that’s where you place your zip. The other two should just be on the root of the sd card though… Sure you have the apps installed? And yes, in ADW ex there is an option to have the app drawer have the same background, in fact I’m pretty sure it is set to that by default. Let me know if you have more trouble.

  37. Posted 2012/03/24 at 1:23 am | Permalink

    Hi Spencer – first of all, great job! I am having issues with setting the grid to 4×7. Should I change the Drawer Columns and Rows (Portrait) to 1, then change the Columns and Rows (Landscape) to 4×7? If not, would you provide a step-by-step guide on how to set the grid?

    By the way, I have the Razr Maxx (if that makes a difference in the grid).

    Keep up the great work!

  38. Posted 2012/03/24 at 1:55 am | Permalink

    @Drew No, set the portrait one to 4×7 and it should work! Landscape is for when your phone is tilted on the side.

  39. Posted 2012/03/24 at 2:00 am | Permalink

    @SpencerRelly hmm, the highest I can go on portrait is 6. I wonder if I have a setting messed up.

  40. Posted 2012/03/24 at 2:08 am | Permalink

    @Spencer Thanks for the help! I figured it out, I had to create my own folders even though I had the apps installed, the folders just were not there.

  41. Posted 2012/03/24 at 2:33 am | Permalink

    @Drew Are you sure you don’t have dimensions reversed? 4 columns and 7 rows? Are you on ADW ex or the free version? I’m pretty sure even in the free version you can go up to 8 rows.

  42. Posted 2012/03/24 at 3:31 am | Permalink

    @Spencer Sorry another quick question, not really related to your screen itself, but do you know how to change temperature from F to C in minimalistic text?

  43. Posted 2012/03/24 at 3:34 am | Permalink

    @kaptawesome Yep, go into Minimalistic Text, click on the widget you want to edit, go down to custom layout, delete the temp (f) and replace it with temp (c). Just click the green + icon and the go to weather and it will be in there.

  44. Posted 2012/03/24 at 3:48 am | Permalink

    @Spencer Your a champ, thanks!

  45. Posted 2012/03/24 at 4:08 am | Permalink

    @kaptawesome No worries! Glad I can help :)

  46. Posted 2012/03/24 at 5:13 am | Permalink

    @Spencer Hey man, great home screen!
    I’m running into an issue with Missed It! on the lock screen. First of all, I don’t know how big of a widget to add, but I’ve been trying to use 3×1. Anywho, when I try to apply the presets you gave us to download, I keep getting “Unfortunately, Missed It has stopped working” over and over again. I’ve tried rebooting, reinstalling missed it, and redownloading your download, but none of it is working for me.

    Also, I can’t find my minimalistictextpreferences anywhere on my Droid, when it’s plugged in. I even did a search for just “min” and it didn’t find anything.
    Any thoughts?

  47. Posted 2012/03/24 at 6:32 am | Permalink

    @Fubsy I ran into that issues, I just created a folder.
    @Spencer, what do you use for sound/wifi toggle?

  48. Posted 2012/03/24 at 12:21 pm | Permalink

    @kaptawesome Switchpro. It’s 99 cents in the market. If you do end up using it, make sure that you add 2 separate 1×1 widgets and not a 2×1 widget because it won’t fit the boxes correctly.

  49. Posted 2012/03/24 at 12:22 pm | Permalink

    @FubsyGamr Unfortunately I have no idea why Missed It would be fc’ing :( and as far as the themes go, try what he said and just create the folders yourself and see if it works then.

  50. Posted 2012/03/24 at 2:13 pm | Permalink

    @Captawesome or Spencer
    Ok, I figured out Missed It. The issue was, I had a folder called portal_missedit, and in it, another folder called portal_missedit, and in there was the information. I just bumped everything up a level, took out the redundant folder, and it was fixed

    About the second thing, with minimalistic text…could you go into greater detail when you said you “made a folder”? I tried to make one called MinimalisticTextPreferences, but it didn’t pick up anything in the Layout options.

  51. Posted 2012/03/25 at 12:38 am | Permalink

    @FubsyGamr So on my phone it’s just a folder called MinimalisticTextPreferences and all of the .mtpref files are in there. Make sure you’ve applied it to your widget. You have to go into Min. Text, click on the widget you want to edit, then go down to the bottom and hit restore and hopefully you’ll see the portal_lock one.

  52. Posted 2012/03/25 at 12:43 pm | Permalink

    @SpencerRelly thank you so much, this is awesome! Got it all set up just how I like it :D

  53. Posted 2012/03/31 at 12:36 pm | Permalink

    So maybe I have a dumb question. But I got the lockscreen setup, but I cant really get icons over the lockscreen icons for text/phone/email. I made it 12×12, and if I add the messaging icon, change it to transparent, its so small and not centered that I cant really press it. What did you do for the icons on the lockscreen?

  54. Posted 2012/04/01 at 2:49 am | Permalink

    @Adampa1006 So in my setup the icons can’t actually be pushed on the lockscreen. The way that missed it works is that if you have a new message or something and you click on the number it will bring you there. But you could try using the app desktop visualizer to make icons that are resizeable over the phone, sms, email pictures.

    Everything’s working fine !
    Thank you for creating and sharing this !

    Hello! I applied most of this to my HTC Inspire, and most of it worked out beautifully thanks to your more detailed instructions in the comments. However, one thing that I could not get to work was Missed It! Despite applying your preferences, the widget keeps messing up. Any advice? Thanks so much for this!

    waaay too awesome for words! being the hardcore portal freak i am i’m gonna use this. the only tough part is black or white?
