Improved Leather UI

Tutorial

  1. 1. Apex Launcher Pro using 7 rows x 9 columns
  2. 2. All icons are in wallpaper - edit each icon (such as the app drawer in center) and use a blank .png file
  3. 3. Fancy Widgets 4 x 1 - use settings and make all elements alpha = 0 or remove them completely so all you have is the weather icon
  4. 4. UCCW - 4 x 1 and stretched to fit 9 columns ... download and edit skin to your liking (I made everything yellow)
  5. 5. For the walls to fit - as you can get them from my .psd files - you need to use MultiPicture Live Wallpaper for the screens to fit right

I wanted to improve upon the first leather setup I posted that won SOD a week ago. I’ve included the UCCW and .PSD files for everyone to use as they see fit. Enjoy!

Amazing!! this second one looks great, for what it looks like, I’m going to start showing up my wife too, your wife has become very famous here :o

  3. Posted 2012/09/19 at 10:18 pm | Permalink

@LiNks @peszek @TheRubenator Thanks all! @Rube – wasn’t aware that she was famous on here ;) … but I do like to have her as my main contact considering I do contact her the most! :)

  4. Posted 2012/09/19 at 10:33 pm | Permalink

@Phoenix The combination of the colors, the layout and the compartment where you keeping your wife contact its crazy nice, imagine if can open!!!! you always amaze me with your work

  5. Posted 2012/09/19 at 10:35 pm | Permalink

@TheRubenator Ha – thanks Rube … I appreciate the kind comments. :) (I really wish that compartment could animate to show the icons inside – that’d be AWESOME!)

  6. Posted 2012/09/19 at 11:33 pm | Permalink

what’s the wrong with you, man? Two screens…:-)) Come on, I will also start propagating my wife:-) And you’ve done that ribbon!

  7. Posted 2012/09/19 at 11:39 pm | Permalink

@garyarts I’ve done that ribbon? I’m confused – lol … yeah I did 2 screens because I thought why not see what I could do as a “flipside” to the first screen … normally not my thing – but I think it worked out alright. :)

  8. Posted 2012/09/19 at 11:40 pm | Permalink

@phoenixwave I mean you mentioned, asked me if would be great to do that.

  9. Posted 2012/09/19 at 11:46 pm | Permalink

    @garyarts ahhhh … yes! I did indeed ;)

  10. Posted 2012/09/20 at 1:58 am | Permalink

    This updated leather is fantastic…!
LOL at your steps though :-P
So happy to see you shared the elements as well, thank you!

  11. Posted 2012/09/20 at 2:11 am | Permalink

@mathewrice Thanks – why laughing at my steps? it’s not like it’s a complex setup – you just have to know what you’re doing with one of the launchers to make it work right ;)

  12. Posted 2012/09/20 at 2:39 am | Permalink

    Super awesome. ^_^

  13. Posted 2012/09/20 at 5:10 am | Permalink

Wow!!! Awesome layout and design. I created an account just to post a request on your previous leather skin. The UCCW widget is a blank white square; Is that intentional?

  14. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:38 am | Permalink

@phoenixwave :-P most of your steps are either vague or not actual steps but details about your design process. My assumption of what the “Steps” section of mycolorscreen was, for uploaders to post the specifics on how to configure what is being depicted.
e.g. set grid layout to 8×8, place app drawer shortcut on grid row 4 column 4, set drawer icon to transparent png file
Don’t get me wrong though, I think the fact that you provided anything at all is beyond commendable, but maybe if you’re gonna go into the “how”, you might want to give the specifics about what you actually did in Photoshop and other tools.
e.g. the settings you used to create the textures and other elements
Know what I’m saying…? You’re kinda half way in and half way out with the details :-P
Regardless though, your skills are masterful :-D

@MissionImprobable @gamefreakgcb @hauntedhunter Thank you very much! I’m glad you liked it. :)

  17. Posted 2012/09/20 at 7:17 pm | Permalink

@mathewrice dude, considering I’m one of the few (maybe 10 total) people that even put things up on here (such as .psd files and uccw skins etc.) and I try and help out everyone as much as possible to create their own set ups – perhaps you can be a little less critical?

The steps thing is NEW … and considering there isn’t a lot to do with my setup other than placing things correctly via Apex Launcher I didn’t think that I’d have to go into too much detail – I changed the steps to describe the setup never-the-less.

By the way, my career is a professional designer and I’m not going to go into full detail and write up tutorials on how to create certain things in Photoshop. That’s like a doctor showing someone how to perform open heart surgery. If everyone could do what I do – then it makes my job less valued.

I appreciate the comments all the same.

Congratulation, this screen has been selected as Screen of the Day 20/09/12

  19. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:09 pm | Permalink

@phoenixwave Love your work man…but why you gotta be so butthurt? Giving people tips or even writing a tutorial is not going to hurt your career. Can’t do anything but help it. You don’t have to do what he asks but at least be cordial about it. You come off sounding like an ass. He paid you compliments. “Regardless though, your skills are masterful :-D” and ” I think the fact that you provided anything at all is beyond commendable.” I don’t see how he is being critical.

And don’t even begin to compare designers to surgeons. That’s just plain stupid.

  20. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:13 pm | Permalink

@Peachanan Thanks Peach! I hope everyone else enjoys the screen! :)

  21. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:24 pm | Permalink

@ehubb lol – I said “I appreciate the comments all the same” there was no “being an ass” involved – people need to learn to not be so sensitive via web content. So because someone posts something I can’t respond to it? I’ll just take the comments, smile and be on my merry way…? Also, I wasn’t beginning to try and compare designers to surgeons (no way in hell could I dream of doing that -lol) – I could’ve used a plethora of other careers if you like – a mechanic, a plumber, a vet, a lawyer etc. – the same idea/concept I was trying to get across still applies.

(by the way … can I get a definition of “butthurt”, it made me chuckle -lol)

    Glad you love the work!

  22. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:29 pm | Permalink

@gamefreakgcb Sorry I missed your post – so the UCCW I uploaded isn’t working? Let me know and I’ll try and upload a new one.

    Thanks! :)

  23. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:31 pm | Permalink

    “That’s like a doctor….”

That is YOU comparing designers to surgeons.
If you show someone how to design…maybe they don’t do as well…No loss.
A surgeon shows someone how to perform surgery..maybe they dont do as well…someone dies.

It’s the design field. Almost anyone can do it. That’s one of the reasons this site exists.

    Also:

Butthurt: An inappropriately strong negative emotional response from a perceived personal insult

  24. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:37 pm | Permalink

@ehubb “Almost anyone can do it” – HAHAHAHA

You read into comments way to seriously or take them the wrong way. It’s on you – I’ve moved past it.

Thanks for the definition – I’ll try and use that word today around the office for something I’m sure.

  25. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:45 pm | Permalink

I didn’t say almost anyone can do it “well.” I just said almost anyone can do it. ;) There’s a huge difference without that one word. I understand the laughter because I do see people try to pull it off every single day.

Most of the work on here is crap. I only follow 13 people on here because of that.

  26. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:49 pm | Permalink

An awesome setup you got going there. I’m definitely gunna apply it to my phone :)
Thanks for sharing all the files.

Also, I like how you changed the soft keys to make it look the HTC One X’s.. may I ask what ROM you are using?

  27. Posted 2012/09/20 at 10:53 pm | Permalink

@naashta awesome! If you do apply it – post it on here so I can see it! :) (purty please)

I’m using AOKP JB 2 ROM … it’s nice but has a few bugs.

If you can’t get the .psd files to work correctly for your setup – let me know – happy to help.

  28. Posted 2012/09/20 at 11:58 pm | Permalink

What do i do with the psd file?

  29. Posted 2012/09/21 at 12:01 am | Permalink

@Jiggoloh .psd is a photoshop file – I uploaded it for everyone to use so that you can try and fit the setup according to what device you are using. If you don’t have photoshop – you can try and use a program called GIMP to do it for you – but no promises there. ;)

  30. Posted 2012/09/21 at 12:02 am | Permalink

    @PhoenixWave ooh ok thanks :)

  31. Posted 2012/09/21 at 12:14 am | Permalink

    @phoenixwave,
    @ehubb,
You two gave me a wonderful start to my morning with reading the back-n-forth, it is comical :-P

PhoenixWave, you did ask me, “why laughing at my steps”, and I did go on to tell you what I thought was funny about them. It wasn’t meant to be perceived as “critical”… I thought you were looking for me to clarify and what I wrote was simply constructive criticism based on my opinions :-)
It was never my intent to have you change what you posted, only to provide more on what I had said, but I do like the new steps better :-P

Eric, your intentions are solid and I agree that out of context, PhoenixWave’s comment may have seemed a bit brash, but for as long as I have been on mycolorscreen, most talented designers here are pretty open to criticism, good or bad (albeit they may not appreciate the negative criticisms :-P).

I’m not offended and I don’t think PhoenixWave is either, so let us all dust off our shoulders and enjoy this Improved Leather UI, I know I will :-D

  32. Posted 2012/09/21 at 12:26 am | Permalink

Yup…stuck editing the psd files. Actually the wallpaper doesn’t completely match my phone reso (480×800 I think)…or maybe its because I’m using Nova Launcher (doubt it though). I’m using gimp to edit the files…..and paint :D

The Google logo on yours looks really cool btw. I don’t think I’ll be able to Paint/GIMP my way to getting that any time soon.

And yeah, I’ll definitely post it…when I get it to look worth presenting :)

  33. Posted 2012/09/21 at 12:36 am | Permalink

    @mathewrice kudos!

@naashta awesome! can’t wait to see it!!!! :)

  34. Posted 2012/09/21 at 12:40 am | Permalink

@naashta and for anyone else trying to get things to work (using the .psd files etc.) – make sure you’re using MULTIPICTURE LIVE WALLPAPER to set the screens walls … otherwise the dimensions will be severely off!

  35. Posted 2012/09/21 at 1:11 am | Permalink

yeah i figured that out…its working now…but i might have to use another launcher (since Nova only allows a 7×7 grid or 8×7 if you include the dock) to get the icon and widget placement correct.

  36. Posted 2012/09/21 at 1:16 am | Permalink

@naashta yep – nova screws things up a bit if you’re going to use my “exact” layout. (I normally use Nova – but wanted to use Apex this time to allow more room for more goodies!)

  37. Posted 2012/09/21 at 1:19 am | Permalink

@LiNks @TheRubenator @naashta @Jiggoloh @ehubb @hauntedhunter @Peachanan @gamefreakgcb @peszek @MissionImprobable for those of you who wanted a UCCW skin that worked – I changed the link above in the description and you can also find it here … I hope: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/53241509/screens/yellowinfo.uccw.zip

  38. Posted 2012/09/21 at 1:28 am | Permalink

I’ll try making it using Nova itself. Having many launchers might slow down my phone…plus Nova has all my customizations (which is actually quite a few) backed up. Worst-case scenario I’ll do it on Apex….cuz this theme is worth it :)

  39. Posted 2012/09/21 at 3:33 am | Permalink

@naashta As said above the alignment is going to change a bit if using a different dimension device, and will always be skewed slightly if you’re using a different launcher. I go between Apex and LauncherPro and there’s a little bit of difference as to where each anchor point is between them.

  40. Posted 2012/09/21 at 3:41 am | Permalink

    ^ nailed it.

  41. Posted 2012/09/21 at 10:23 am | Permalink

@phoenixwave I’m having issues getting even the new linked file to show in UCCW. By any chance was that made with the 1.0 version of the UCCW? The new update, 2.0, broke a lot of the skins I had on the phone. I know I’m doing it right as I always copy the same way and all the other ones show up.

  42. Posted 2012/09/21 at 7:07 pm | Permalink

@gamefreakgcb The file I uploaded is a zip file of what you actually need – so you gotta make sure to unzip the files and then import them into UCCW. (it was made with the newest version of UCCW by the way) :)

  43. Posted 2012/09/22 at 8:25 pm | Permalink

I was just about to ask for the UCCW file, thanks for the file :o, the look of the second screen looks grate with the cards
