This is a single page design (for the most part). The large icons can link to single apps and the smaller icons can link to app folders. The design is incredibly versatile and can be customized to suit your needs. Wallpapers, apps, links etc.
I have added a tutorial on Zooper widget near the end of my video so you can learn how to customize the settings for your own design. Enjoy!

@crashcat007 Thanks, I will be doing a tutorial this weekend.

hmmm… hope this theme can still be set to multiple screen.. like the previous theme u made… :) nice flat screen!…

  4. Posted 2013/05/11 at 3:11 am | Permalink

@bobbydrakes it certainly can. Originally I was going to use the large tiles a links to themed pages so you could totally set it up that way. Zooper widget is much easier to use and edit than UCCW, so the files will be easily edited. Just let me know if you need any help once I get the files sorted out. Should be ready sometime tomorrow.

    What is the calendar widget?

  6. Posted 2013/05/11 at 10:26 am | Permalink

@Rusoftware it’s called Neat calendar widget. I love it. Scrolls really nicely through your events.

Sorry to bother you, I am using Note 2, therefore, I don’t have the bar at the bottom, so when I apply the zooper widget for the symmetry, the black and white icons will not line up properly. Would you please tell me how to fix it. I try using the Photoshop, the outcome till the same. Please show me a way to fix the problem. Thank you

@BigPotato1963 Can you post a screen shot for me?

  14. Posted 2013/05/12 at 11:13 am | Permalink

Hi Brad, I upload the screen shot at this link. Thank you

  15. Posted 2013/05/12 at 11:47 am | Permalink

@BigPotato1963 okay, thanks for the screen shot. There are a couple of things to work on. The first thing to look at is the grid size. Your phone may be taller than my Nexus 4 so it’s adding too much space. The layout works basically like this. 2 grids for the top. 1 grid for the power toggles. 2×2 for the larger tiles and 1×2 for the bottom tiles. So on mine it’s a 9hx6w grid. If you hold down on an icon you will see the grid appear and you should be able to see which area is misaligned. I sometimes start but dropping a bunch of apps on the screen to get the grid layout and adjust the Zooper widget tiles from there. Once you have the grid setup you can follow the instructions near the end of my video on how to move and resize the tiles in Zooper widget. I hope this helps.

  16. Posted 2013/05/12 at 12:16 pm | Permalink

Thank you for your help. I will try sometimes today and let you know whether it is working for me or not. Thank you

  17. Posted 2013/05/12 at 12:37 pm | Permalink This is the best I can do. Is it looks ok from your point of view, please let me know. Thank. Try my best, the grid that my phone is — according to your color templates from the zooper will be between 9×6 to 10×6. I can’t properly load the icon at all. Anyway, thank for your help.

  18. Posted 2013/05/12 at 2:59 pm | Permalink

@BigPotato1963 I think you did great. It looks like you get an extra row in your grid due to the size. This could work out well if you want to add some more icons to the top or bottom or if you want to use a 2 row setup for additional power toggle widgets in your Widgetsoid setup. You could even add a 3rd row of white icons to the top or bottom which could look cool. It all comes down to how much time you want to spend on it :-). Zooper widget gives you the ability to duplicate items just by selecting an item with the check box, then selecting the icon at the top that looks like a layer of squares with a + sign in the middle. Super handy. Good luck.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have a silly question,. How can I made those apps work, like email, text those tabs — when I press on it, it said no app install. Do I use desktop visualizer to make it work, or have some other ways. thank you. I am learning how to create theme right at this moment. Thank you for your help

  20. Posted 2013/05/12 at 4:02 pm | Permalink

@BigPotato1963 Not to worry. There is a bit of a learning curve at first. Each one of the text items link to a corresponding app so the ones I was using may not be applicable to your set up. If you open your zooper widget you can select the corresponding shape or text and apply an app to open. I have given some instructions on how to do this near the end of my video tutorial. I suggest you watch that first as I have explained it in detail.

    Lock screen is up

  24. Posted 2013/05/13 at 5:31 pm | Permalink

I was able to install your theme, but the only thing that doesnt load is the main symmetry widget, which is pretty important. Even when I load it up, it never appears. It just stays on “resize or tap to start”. Any ideas?

  25. Posted 2013/05/13 at 7:11 pm | Permalink

@Cake_Dogg You may need to restart your phone as sometimes memory can be an issue, but I have re-uploaded a new file.

  26. Posted 2013/05/13 at 10:04 pm | Permalink

Still not working. Oh well. :( Shame. I might try again later. If anyone fixes this problem, do tell me.

  27. Posted 2013/05/13 at 10:21 pm | Permalink

@Cake_Dogg Okay one last ditch effort. I modified an older file and re-saved it as a new file called Symmetry 2. You will need to look for this file or alternately remove the widget then add a new one and find the file. You will need to re-size it to fit, then tap on the widget to open the zooper widget settings then tap back so it will re-size.

@Iwantchitzz Thanks so much. Appreciate your comments.

  34. Posted 2013/05/14 at 1:02 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Its the top one that there is problem with. If you can maybe walkthrough how to recreate it, that’d be grand.

Great work…really looking forward to get it working. Btw , I tried the new files and it did the same.

  35. Posted 2013/05/14 at 2:16 pm | Permalink

@sjamg Okay, try this first. I have exported the files again. so try one more time to copy them over. The other thing to try is to insert the secondary header rather than the main one. They are both the same with the exception of the colors on the battery progress bar being opposite.

Re-creating them is actually not that hard. I created a short video tutorial for you here:

  36. Posted 2013/05/14 at 10:41 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad It works now! Some things a bit out of line, but no big deal. It looks absolutely amazing. Congratz for such a clean and beautiful theme. Thanks for going that extra mile and actually looking for a way to solve my problem. :)

  37. Posted 2013/05/14 at 10:57 pm | Permalink

@Cake_Dogg Glad you got things working. Are you on an S3? I think you should definitely get the SMPL black icons. Makes it much better. You could adjust the bottom icon text to move down too. But overall you have it all working. Good job.

  38. Posted 2013/05/14 at 11:03 pm | Permalink

If anyone is having trouble adding the top Zooper widget in on the main page I have made a video tutorial on how to recreate it here:

  39. Posted 2013/05/14 at 11:44 pm | Permalink

Yeah on an S3. Ill work out all the kinks eventually. I think it looks pretty good so far though.

@Cake_Dogg I agree. Let me know if you need any help. Cheers

Trying to install the Symmetry homescreen and got as far as the page with the widgets, but I’m not seeing the Zooper Widget icon. I see all the others. I transferred all your setup files to my phone. I’m using a Galaxy Note 2. Any suggestions? Or is there a way for me to start over? Thanks.

  42. Posted 2013/05/15 at 12:34 am | Permalink

@ungerwu try re-copying the files over.

  43. Posted 2013/05/15 at 8:32 am | Permalink

Hi Brad – an excellent design. I am trying to install on a Galaxy S2 (running SlimROM) and it mostly works but the main widgets generate an error when restored (Failed: java.ioFileNotFoundException) on the Mueseo300-Regular.otf font. The font is in internal storage in the Font folder and appears as one of the available fonts when you configure the widget. The other widgets appear OK (Headers and side screens) but the main image remains ‘blank’. Any thoughts?

Edit: I get the same font error on the secondary headers but they appear. It’s the main background that doesn’t show up.

  44. Posted 2013/05/15 at 9:55 am | Permalink

@Pardlerum I’m really not sure on this one. I’ve never seen that error before. Have you tried rebooting your phone?

  45. Posted 2013/05/15 at 10:04 am | Permalink

I’m a newb to this. When you say to download the setup files at, do I download these to my phone? Computer? After I download them what do I do? Thanks, sorry if this is a very basic question.

  46. Posted 2013/05/15 at 10:10 am | Permalink

@calebmc473 Download the files to your computer. Unzip the file then watch my video tutorial.

  47. Posted 2013/05/15 at 10:20 am | Permalink

  48. Posted 2013/05/15 at 10:40 am | Permalink

@BadBrad Yes – rebooted and started from fresh. There is definitely something weird going on as it did eventually display but was not the correct dimensions. Could it be that running at 182 DPI is causing an issue or should the widget scale as required?
Now I have rebooted again and it has disappeared. There is a message ‘loading zw..’ in the background so I guess Zooper Widget is failing to load that specific widget…

  49. Posted 2013/05/15 at 11:06 am | Permalink

@Pardlerum It could be a memory issue. Did you try re-copying the files?

  50. Posted 2013/05/15 at 11:34 am | Permalink

@BadBrad Yes – have re-copied files. The files all appear OK and I can see Symmetry and Symmetry 2 widgets available – I just can’t get them to display. It could be that there’s an issue with SlimROM in relation to Zooper Widget.

  51. Posted 2013/05/15 at 11:51 am | Permalink

@BadBrad It does seem to be something with Zooper (or your backup) – if I try and change the widget for one of the in-built Zooper ones it also doesn’t display and bringing it to the front does not display it if the error has already occurred. Out of interest – what is the difference between Symmetry and Symmetry 2 widgets?

  52. Posted 2013/05/15 at 11:58 am | Permalink

@Pardlerum It could be that your Rom is the problem. Can you create a zooper widget yourself and just add it in? Sorry. I may try to recreate the widget in UCCW on the weekend to see if that solves the issue for some people.

  53. Posted 2013/05/15 at 12:06 pm | Permalink

@Pardlerum I resaved the files in a slightly different way. Not sure if it will make a difference or not but give it a try. The Symmetry 2 file was a second version of the main image. You could use that if you want to try it.

  54. Posted 2013/05/15 at 2:32 pm | Permalink

I got it all set up and its working great on my note 2. When I was adding stuff to my folders I got a little over zealous and accidentally deleted my games folder and icon. How do I get that back?

  55. Posted 2013/05/15 at 3:03 pm | Permalink

    Never mind. Figured it out.

  56. Posted 2013/05/15 at 9:08 pm | Permalink

    @calebmc473 Okay great.

  57. Posted 2013/05/15 at 9:15 pm | Permalink

I’m using the droid razr and the layout is shifted off the icons

  58. Posted 2013/05/16 at 3:39 am | Permalink

@BadBrad I have re-created the main widget from scratch in Zoopa and it works fine. I think it is probably a Zoopa issue and the fact that I am running at a non-standard DPI for the device. When I save the Zoopa widget there is no preview image generated – but it works fine. I had to change the positions of the rectangles to make it all fit and line up with the Nova grid but its now all looking great. Thanks for sharing this great design.

  59. Posted 2013/05/16 at 10:36 am | Permalink

@Pardlerum Wow. Good effort. Sorry my files didn’t work for you.

  60. Posted 2013/05/16 at 11:29 am | Permalink

@BadBrad Thanks – I learnt a lot in the process! Also – you don’t need to use Simple Text anymore to make a transparent widget for Desktop Visualizer. When you ‘Select Icon’ choose ‘Others’ and then ‘None’. This does the same thing without needing Simple Text. Works in Ver 1.4.0.

  61. Posted 2013/05/16 at 11:32 am | Permalink

@Pardlerum Thanks for that tip. Much appreciated.

  62. Posted 2013/05/16 at 12:54 pm | Permalink

Thanks alot. This is how it looks on my Note 2.

  63. Posted 2013/05/16 at 1:33 pm | Permalink

@calebmc473 Looks excellent. My only suggestion would be for the bottom 6 white icons for play, chrome, apps etc. You should try to move the icons and text so the text and icon is centered to the white area. I think it would balance better. But if it’s too much of a hassle you are good as it is.

  64. Posted 2013/05/16 at 2:08 pm | Permalink

Thanks for the suggestion. I moved the text but the icons are stuck to the grid. Any other way to move them?

  65. Posted 2013/05/16 at 2:12 pm | Permalink

@calebmc473 The way I set things up was to first drop a bunch of icons onto the screen so I could see where the grid lined up. This then allowed me to move the tiles to the right spot. That way I was using the icons as the grid because they can’t move the same way the tiles and text can in Zooper widget. Being a Note 2 you may be able to add another layer to the grid on the top or bottom. IE: put 3 more icons where the widgetsoid toggle is and move everything up.

Take some time to get it right, but starting with the icons in the grid will help a ton. Good luck.

  66. Posted 2013/05/16 at 8:25 pm | Permalink

Your Symmetry screen really inspired me. I just wish I could get it to work. I’ve got all the programs and files and watched the entire video several times. The problem comes in with getting the Zooper widgets to work. The main screen widget will not install. I get the following error message:

Failed: /storage/emulated/0?fonts/Museo300-Regular.otf: open failed: ENOENT (No such file or directory)

The odd thing is I get the same error message when loading the header widgets, but they will install on the second or third attempt.

If I need to create my own boxes, I would if I could figure it out.

You’ve been able to help a lot of others. I hope you can help me, too.

  67. Posted 2013/05/16 at 8:40 pm | Permalink

@shadowing By the look of things you are missing the font. I’m not sure what phone you have, but it could be that it doesn’t support the use of external fonts. But I may be wrong. I have created an export of the main and top main header widgets with the fonts converted to normal/default to see if this helps. Just copy the 4 files in the zip into your ZooperWidget folder on your phone. You can get them here:

    Good luck.

  68. Posted 2013/05/16 at 9:14 pm | Permalink

Wow, you’re fast! The font is in the internal memory of my Galaxy Note. I downloaded and copied over the new files. This time I don’t get any error messages, but the results are the same. The large widget doesn’t take at all and the header widget didn’t take the first time, but it did the second.

  69. Posted 2013/05/17 at 12:38 pm | Permalink

Great screen Brad! Definitely at the cutting edge of design trends these days.

Here’s a tip for the Galaxy users who are having problems getting the small white box icons to line up correctly – turn on the Dock in Nova Settings. That gets the grid to line up perfectly. I just leave the dock empty, but you could add icons to it as well.

  70. Posted 2013/05/17 at 9:43 pm | Permalink

@Pfenyx Thanks. You can also add an extra row to your grid and keep the dock off. That should do the same thing, but allow you to use the space for apps.

  71. Posted 2013/05/17 at 9:44 pm | Permalink

@shadowing Sorry it’s not working. Not sure why.

  72. Posted 2013/05/17 at 11:19 pm | Permalink

Yeah, I’m having a rough time trying to get the icons aligned on my Note 2 as well… and it’s going to drive me crazy if I can’t line up the icons perfectly… hmm.

  73. Posted 2013/05/17 at 11:22 pm | Permalink

@rtatum you’ll need to learn a little bit about Zooper widget. The spacing can be edited quite easily. You need to read the comments in this post and follow the instructions at the end of my video.

  74. Posted 2013/05/17 at 11:38 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad I’m still watching the video, I’ll go back and reread the comments if I can’t figure it out. Thanks :P

Edit: Pretty simple after catching the Zooper tutorial at the end, thanks!

  75. Posted 2013/05/17 at 11:39 pm | Permalink

@rtatum be sure to let me know if your stuck and I will do my best to help if I can.

  76. Posted 2013/05/18 at 12:37 am | Permalink

@BadBrad Think I’m doing well… I lose the nice uniform spacing between the tiles like you designed, but it’s minor, I think I can live with it…

After a quick tweaking, joined the white tile under the clock with the shaded background of the lower grid as well, since the Note’s spacing kills that too.

  77. Posted 2013/05/18 at 1:41 am | Permalink

@rtatum I think it looks good. All you need to do to fill in the space is add a little bit of height to the larger tiles. Add to the top on the top row and to the bottom on the lower row. Maybe 10 or 15 pixels.

  78. Posted 2013/05/18 at 1:59 am | Permalink

@BadBrad Didn’t even occur to me to stretch the tiles instead of offsetting them further… thanks again.

  79. Posted 2013/05/18 at 2:13 am | Permalink

    @rtatum you are welcome.

  80. Posted 2013/05/18 at 2:25 pm | Permalink

Loving this! Got this and the lockscreen set up and customized on my Galaxy S III after resizing and aligning the Zooper Widgets. I don’t see myself switching designs in the near future.

    @Kantana thank you. Much appreciated.

Excellent tutorial and screen! I’ve been trying to throw a “Beautiful Widgets” Weather widget in place of the Zooper Widget that is there (since I already bought “BW”). I like the forecasting ability of the BW widget. Any suggestions on how to get it to fit in that same area?

  83. Posted 2013/05/19 at 2:16 am | Permalink

Hey, quick question. I am having trouble getting the icons and text to line up the way I want. I watched your full video tutorial, but I am confused about what exactly I need to do. I am on the new HTC One, and for some reason, my icons are all closer to the edges of their boxes. If I click and hold on the little icon, it will allow me to drag it around and move it, but the grid is not large enough (I guess) to allow for perfect placement. What should I do?

Just so you know what I am talking about, here is a screenshot:

  84. Posted 2013/05/19 at 3:38 am | Permalink

A comment and a question. Firstly a comment about the font problem – looking at the users experiencing this problem it is seems like it is a Galaxy problem. I have an S3 and had the same problem. To solve it I just went into the Text area in the Layout and reselected the same font from the font list and then resaved the template. This solved the problem – not sure why but it did.
And a questions – you are using the Simple Text widgets to create a transparent button to select applications – why do you do this rather than just using the App selection that you can do in the Zooper Widget? To me this seems easier – have I missed something?

  85. Posted 2013/05/19 at 11:26 am | Permalink

@fredhoffmann3 the space is 6×2 so I’m not sure how that will work. You could try Eye in the sky weather. It’s free and has a similar style to the one I used.

  86. Posted 2013/05/19 at 11:33 am | Permalink

@wvcaudill2 This is fixable. The One has higher resolution so the grid may need to be adjusted. Or what I did when I originally created it was drop a bunch of icons onto the screen so you can see the grid clearly. Then I went into Zooper widget and adjusted the tiles to fit the grid space of the icons. The things in Zooper widget can be moved but you have to work with the grid. You may need to add a bit more height to the tiles to make them fit.

  87. Posted 2013/05/19 at 11:37 am | Permalink

@michaelh Thanks for the tips. Good advice on the fonts. As for the Zooper widget selection, this is a great option. I used desktop visualizer so the grid could be adjusted but I think your idea is better. I’ve been using DV for so long I missed the obvious.

  88. Posted 2013/05/19 at 12:51 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad I’ve been going at this for the better part of 3 hours, and I still cannot get the alignment correct. I’ve used all sorts of grid sizes. You got any other suggestions?

  89. Posted 2013/05/19 at 1:04 pm | Permalink

@wvcaudill2 Welcome to my world :-) what you have to do is think only about the grid first. The large tiles are 2×2 and the smaller ones are 1×2. If you put a bunch of icons on the screen you can see where the tiles need to go. It’s okay to make some of the tiles taller if need be.

If you look at this screenshot you can see that the icons define the grid layout. All you do is make the tiles fit that size of the icon grid. 4 icons for the large tiles and 2 icons for the bottom tiles.

    Hope this helps.

  90. Posted 2013/05/19 at 1:16 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad The problem is that no matter what size grid I create, I can never get everything to be symmetrical.

  91. Posted 2013/05/19 at 3:01 pm | Permalink

@wvcaudill2 What phone are you using? I’m on a Galaxy S III and I had to modify the Zoopers myself to get them to fit. It took some time, but it was worth it.

  92. Posted 2013/05/19 at 3:14 pm | Permalink

@Kantana I am on the HTC One

  93. Posted 2013/05/19 at 3:16 pm | Permalink

@wvcaudill2 My wife has the One. Give me a bit and I will see if I can sort it out for you.

  94. Posted 2013/05/19 at 3:57 pm | Permalink

@wvcaudill2 okay I did a layout for the HTC One. Download the files again and select Symmetry – One for the widget. The spacing is slightly different but it should work well. Let me know how you make out.

  95. Posted 2013/05/19 at 4:19 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad It works perfectly! Thank you so much!

  96. Posted 2013/05/19 at 4:38 pm | Permalink

@wvcaudill2 You are very welcome. Don’t stop playing with Zooper widget. It’s very powerful and much easier to use than UCCW. You’ll get the hang of it.

You wouldn’t believe how many hours that has gone into this project. Beyond belief! Others have mentioned the same problem I’ve had with getting the main Zooper Widget into place. It just didn’t want to apply!

Well, I’ve built something very close to yours from scratch – more than once. Did I say this has been very time consuming? Everything is done except for a major step. The icons that link to the folders still need to go on. Then I’ll probably need to realign the grids. Sigh.

How are the icons linked to the folders? What program did you use? Is it possible to link them to Nova drawers? I would really love to have the large grid link to a Nova drawer and the small icon a specific program. Is that possible?

My screen is beautiful. It will be fantastic when this is finished. Thanks again!!!

@shadowing Sorry it took you so long to set up, but glad you worked it out. The learning experience will help you down the road.

I went over setting up links in my video, but here’s the basics. To set the link on the tiles, just select the tile then select “module on tap”. To use Nova settings slide over to shortcuts then select Nova launcher. Then choose the feature you want. The small icons are just regular folders you drag the icons on top of each other. Then hold down on the icon and select edit. You can then choose the SMPL White icons.

@BadBrad I did try adding a row per your suggestion before resorting to the dock. When I would do that, either the whole screen would get scaled down, or all of the icons would get displaced and not easily moved into a better location.

In the end, turning on the dock was a super-easy and very accurate fix. I’ve ended up using it in a similar way that you were using the icons on the calculator screen in lieu of the weather.

@Pfenyx Great. Glad you got it working.

Thought that I would report in that mine is finally done. To finalize things, I needed to change the desktop grid.

This was my first foray into customizing and I’m glad that I’ve learned so much. Thanks so much for all your help.

@shadowing You are very welcome. The best part is when you do your next one you will be able to do things much faster. Each phone is a bit different but you will get the hang of it. Cheers.

I just wanna say I did this last night on my HTC1X+ and I LOVE IT! :) I spent a little extra time, got everything how I wanted it, named, etc. I’d post a photo, but no upload here. :) Maybe when i get home tonight I will, and I wanna do the lock screen next! thanks again! :)

Brad – I have to tell you that this design is the first one, in my years of Android, that has made me want to go thru what I know will be a potentially frustrating and rewarding experience. I am having problem with the initial file transfer onto my SG3. I downloaded and unzipped on my computer. I connected my phone and I get a Phone and a Card option. When I click on the Data folder in Phone, I can see the com.teslacoilsw folder. However, when I try to move the folders either into that folder directly, the Data folder, or even the Phone folder, I don’t get the option to go to “Symmetry”. It only shows “Backups” on a pop-up window with nothing under it. This makes me think the files didn’t transfer. Sometimes I get the red circle with a bar when I try to transfer, but sometimes not. Restarted phone and still can’t see anything under “Restore”. I promise I know how to drag and drop files. Any help will be appreciated.

  107. Posted 2013/05/22 at 11:19 pm | Permalink

@teegeecee Thank you for the compliment. I’m glad you have decided to customize your phone. I personally think it’s very rewarding.
I only have a Nexus 4 so I am a bit limited but the way it works on all the phones I’ve used is that there is a folder for each backup and widget. I have each folder in my zip file saved with the correct files so all you have to do is confirm each location. If you have done this then I would suggest first for you to try re-downloading and re-copying the files again. If that doesn’t work reboot your phone.

I know that it works on samsung phones because many people have installed it.

@jbinner Looks pretty good. If you want to get things aligned a little better I can give you some pointers. There is a trick that helps you to get the grid right.

Look at the 2 screen shots below.

You can see that I have placed some larger icons on the screen. These ones are the Goolors icons but you can use any larger icon that is perfectly square. The MIUI sets work well.

All you are wanting to do is align your icons on your screen over top of your zooper widget. based on the grid. THe larger tiles fit to a 2×2 size and the bottom ones fit to a 2×1 size. So the zooper widget tiles can just be moved into position to fit exactly where the icons are sitting. The tiles may need to be adjusted in height or width to make them fit on your phone but they will fit if you follow the grid. Once you have the tiles resized and in place you can move the text so it is centered to the tiles on the bottom or moved slightly left or right to fit on the larger tiles.

Once that is done you can delete the larger icons and use the SMPL white or black icons which will now fit perfectly with a little it of space around them.

    Hope this helps.

May I post an open request to anyone who can help me get the initial files transferred to my SG3? I have tried EVERYTHING that I have found on the interwebs and nothing is working. The problem is getting my computer to recognize it as a USB device rather than as a media device so I can drag and drop the files. Not trying to hijack this dialog page, but since others SG3 users have made it work, I know it can be done. Not sure how to tell others to contact me without putting my email address here. Thanks and sorry.

  111. Posted 2013/05/23 at 10:33 pm | Permalink

    @teegeecee Try the Airdroid app.

  112. Posted 2013/05/24 at 7:41 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad That is a really cool app. It seemed like things transferred over and I could see them in the app on my phone, but I still couldn’t find anything under Nova Settings/Restore. I also tried FilePush. Same thing in that it looked like the files made it to my phone. Anyway, thanks for trying to help. I hate to take more of your time. Now that I have paid the $ for Nova Pro, I’ll just figure out how to customize it for me, though it won’t be as cool as what you did.

  113. Posted 2013/05/24 at 8:27 pm | Permalink

@teegeecee Maybe try to redownload my files. It may be a corrupted file. You should be able to see it if the backup file is in data/com.teslacoil.launcher/backup directory.

  114. Posted 2013/05/26 at 5:04 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Thanks for the Airdroid suggestion. Low and behold I found the files in MyFiles and got them moved over to the backup folder. Was able to find Symmetry. Having trouble finding the Symmetry ZW widget (not showing up under “SD Card), but will try to re-load the files. Built the top widget. Really cool stuff. Do you have a tutorial on building Symmetry in case I can’t get to load? I would imagine it would be a bit of a pain to have to do that. Thanks again for being willing to be so helpful. Sorry if I’m a pain.

  115. Posted 2013/05/26 at 5:44 pm | Permalink

@teegeecee Not a problem. Just go into Zooper widget and save any widget. This creates a Zooper widget folder. Look for that in Airdroid and copy my files over to the ZooperWidget folder. Then look for it.

  116. Posted 2013/05/26 at 7:10 pm | Permalink

What I finally figured out was to go into My Files and move things to their proper location so that I could find them when I followed the video. I am pretty much done and it really looks great and flows well. Watching the end of the tutorial so I can figure out how to change some of the ZooperWidget panes (I don’t really need a “Work” one) and to make sure I get my apps loaded in the bottom panes. Thanks again. To really make it look cleaner, I want to figure out how to modify the phone’s notification section at the top. Should be easy.

  117. Posted 2013/05/26 at 7:55 pm | Permalink

@teegeecee excellent. It only gets easier from here.

  118. Posted 2013/05/27 at 7:26 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Borrowed heavily from your main ZW for my current setup. Adjusting that for my SGII was not easy, but I got it working. Had to drop some items in the process. Overall, just wanted to say thanks. For those getting the java error, you can safely ignore them, as the widget will eventually stick. Just make sure to turn off all of the within-tile hotspots, as BB has them linked to his own apps. I also ported your setup to Apex without issue. I also prefer Nova, but the ROM I have running has Apex baked in, and i didn’t feel like reflashing Nova.

  119. Posted 2013/05/27 at 9:03 pm | Permalink

@micmars Thanks! For the hotspot links, these can be changed to the apps of your choice in zooper widget. I went over that part at the end of my video.

  120. Posted 2013/05/27 at 11:57 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad No doubt you did. Your video was extremely detailed. I mentioned that not because you didn’t, but because after moving the main ZW to my phone, and adjusting all of the sizes, positioning all of the text, and the iterative process I traversed to getting it how I wanted, I still had that with which to deal. More of a thinking out loud comment, for me and perhaps others. Again, thanks for the awesome work. You made a home screen that is extremely flexible and can be personalized by many.

Thanks again for everything. And if you have any input on my choice of color, especially the dock, please provide. I’m not completely satisfied with the results.

  121. Posted 2013/05/28 at 12:10 am | Permalink

@micmars Okay. Good to hear. If you post a screen shot I’ll do my best to help with the colors.

  122. Posted 2013/05/28 at 4:36 am | Permalink

BadBrad, your screens are awesome…very well thought out and extremely functional. I have explored many but yours are the ones that I use…well done and much Aloha…

  123. Posted 2013/05/28 at 6:11 am | Permalink Forgot the obvious, here you go. The reason I have the dock enabled on my setup was I couldn’t think of a way to put my email (not gmail) unread count in Zooper workout either a) putting the icon under the zooper tile as a blank png file for the email icon and resizing the widget over it, or b) passing a Tasker variable to Zooper. It looks like you can put almost any unread notifications in Zooper with Tasker, but there is a bit of a learning curve. I did have white icons in the app drawer, which looked better, but still not to my liking. Again, any input is welcome.

  124. Posted 2013/05/28 at 8:58 am | Permalink

@Pwedy Thank you for your comments. Much appreciated and Aloha to you! Love Hawaii.

  125. Posted 2013/05/28 at 9:13 am | Permalink

@micmars There is a feature in Nova Launcher that allows you to show your unread count on standard email. You just need to activate it in your Nova settings and install Tesla. There is no reason why you can’t use the dock, but you should use the white and black icons IMO. Your design is fighting with itself because there is too much going on. Simplifying the design will actually make it more functional and more appealing. Your background is also a bit too complicated. I struggled a lot with wallpapers on this theme because the structure needs to not compete with the vertical and horizontal style too much. Plus you need something that isn’t too dark or too light, otherwise the icons don’t show up as well.

Finally, some of your grid alignment is still off. I made a post earlier showing how to get the grid right so your tiles will be symmetrical. It is important to have proper alignment and spacing.

In the end it’s your phone, so be happy with it. These are just some of my pointers. Use or ignore as you see fit.

  126. Posted 2013/05/28 at 1:12 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Hi, Brad; I asked your opinion because I respect it, and you gave a very good one. This was one of those times where I knew that I was not happy with the layout, and yet could not find the words to describe it. I like the wallpaper by itself, but the tiles do indeed struggle with the nice HTC wallpaper strong angles. I’m on Apex, so their plugin works just as good as Tesla’s, so for those I’m good to go. I will try another wallpaper and switch to BBB’s whites, and see how it looks. As to the alignment, it is a work-in-progress, The sizes are right, and working with Zooper to me is easy, so I can fiddle with those once the look is locked in. Thanks; nice to have feedback from someone whom doesn’t shy from honesty.

  127. Posted 2013/05/28 at 1:28 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Already changed the wallpaper to the one labeled “Symmetry 1,” changed the dock to BBB’s white icons, and it made an instant difference. Will fiddle with the alignment w/in Zooper later this PM. Thanks again, Brad!

@micmars Glad to be of help. I know that it can be difficult getting things right. This design is a strange one because It looks simple, but the spacing is so important. THe post I made above shows some of the things I did to ensure that the tiles all lined up. Here’s the post:

Look at the 2 screen shots below.

You can see that I have placed some larger icons on the screen. These ones are the Goolors icons but you can use any larger icon that is perfectly square. The MIUI sets work well.

Once that is done you can delete the larger icons and use the SMPL white or black icons which will now fit perfectly with a little it of space around them.

    Hope this helps.

@BadBrad Hi, Brad. Yes, it helps. Now that I’m home and can focus on this, I can work it out methodically. My first impulse was to make a spreadsheet of grid sizes, and figure out the tile and gutter sizes based on my phone canvas. But using your approach seems much less time consuming. I think I’m going to kill the dock and use your photos as a guideline. Will send you a Dropbox link when I’ve made some headway. Thanks again. Best.

  130. Posted 2013/05/28 at 8:59 pm | Permalink

@micmars Ya, I think you will find that putting the icons on the screen will save you a ton of time and grief. Looking forward to seeing it when you get it setup.

  131. Posted 2013/05/29 at 1:15 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Hi, Brad: Made some headway last night, I ended up switching to Nova and killing Apex, but had a difficult time with various grid sizes, tile sizes and overall alignment. Ultimately, I never could get the first two rows of tiles to align properly. So, I re-enabled the dock, and made this a stopping point: https: //www.dropbox. com/s/ppcbl9k37xj1xb2/2013-05-29%2013.02.36.png (take out the spaces, because posting this link causes the dang filter to spawn the comment-waiting-moderation warning, meaning you will never see my comment).

    Thanks again!

  133. Posted 2013/05/31 at 6:57 pm | Permalink

@micmars That is looking great. 3 small comments that you certainly can ignore (i’m picky ;-)

    1. The text is a little bit big. This can make things feel crowded. If you are able I would reduce the text a little bit. If you have it big so you can read it easier then it’s fine. The weather icon could be reduced so it fits a little better in the space as well.

    2. I would move the icons into the top right corner. I suggest this only if you are using the icons as folders and the large tile as a direct link.

    3. Check that the alignment of the vertical text in the large tiles lines up along the bottom. And don’t push it too close to the bottom edge. This again is just to ensure symmetry. Alignment is very important in this design, so it will look better if everything breathes a bit and is all lined up the same.

Other than that you have it happening.

  134. Posted 2013/05/31 at 8:23 pm | Permalink

@micmars Sorry I also forgot to reply to your other question about the icon packs. I have made a bunch of icons and also added some of the ones that you are using in your theme ie: starbucks, dictionary etc. You can check them out here:

@silverbudge Welcome to Android Ralph. I will try to answer your questions. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have more questions. I will assume we are talking about Zooper widget.

    1. You can’t add an app to a widget but you can add an image. To do this you open up your Zooper widget. Select layout. Then tap the + at the top right. Scroll down to the bottom and select bitmap. You then can locate any bitmap icon set on your phone and save it. Once the image is in place you can move it using the X and Y settings. You can also apply a click able hotspot to the image by selecting Module on tap. Locate the app or shortcut you want to use and save.

You can also place an app icon on top of the widget. This is what I have done in my tutorial for my Symmetry theme. But if you have not set this up then you just have to make sure that you have Nova Launcher installed and have the setting for Allow widgets to overlap turned on. Go to Nova settings. Desktop. Then scroll down and make sure Widget overlap is checked on.

Marco from MCS did a tutorial on Zooper Widget. You may want to check it out here

    2. I am going to assume that you mean, how can you add more apps to a folder. For this there are 2 ways. By default you can drop any app on top of another app and it will place the apps into folders. But sometimes Nova doesn’t allow this, so what you have to do is tap the folder then select the 3 dots in the bottom right corner. Select add. Then just locate the app you like and it will be placed into you folder.

    I hope this helps.

“Calculator Widget 10 ” with their last update added AirPush Ad notifications. I don’t mind ads for free apps, but this is too much. A calculator widget should not need GPS or phone call permsissions.

  137. Posted 2013/06/03 at 12:58 pm | Permalink

@outergarage I’m sure there are other apps you can try.

  138. Posted 2013/06/03 at 7:39 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Thanks, BB; very kind of you to share the link. Your input was excellent, and I respect attention to detail. Most of the text size issues were, as you rightly guessed, for readability. I made some changes to my setup, as I can’t stop tinkering. Anyway, I can’t seem to get away from trying to make the tiles transparent. Let me know if you think this wall works with the main Zooper screen. Again, remove the spaces in the link. https: //www.dropbox. com/s/tljodbure59twv2/2013-06-03%2018.25.14.png

  139. Posted 2013/06/03 at 9:01 pm | Permalink

@micmars I think the transparency works if you like it. I like the solid look, but it is certainly a personal preference. Just get the spaces of the channels between the tiles to be as equal as possible and you’ll be good to go ;-)

This is great stuff and, for the most part, I have it up and running. However, I do have a couple of questions. Most are on the main screen, but one about the lockscreen. I’ll include that here rather than on that page.

Re: the main screen, I got it all up and running and it looks great. However, I can’t get the “badge icons” working. Is there something I’m missing to get those enabled? I expected the phone, email and text ones, particularly, to show how many new/missed. But none of them are doing that.

Also re: the main screen, is there a way to just duplicate the main screen? I’d like all of my screens to mimic the “main” one (I only have three, but I’d like to have them all look/behave the same, just with different categories/folders). I thought maybe Nova offered a way to duplicate a page but I can’t seem to find anything indicating that they do (which seems surprising, given that it seems to be able to do everything else).

For the battery bar across the top, is there a way to get it to change colors based on activity? What I mean is, I’d like to have it green above 60% charge, yellow between 30 and 60%, and red under 30%. Or, at the very least, green above 40% and red below 40%. I’d also LOVE to have it a totally different color while it’s plugged in/charging. Is any of this possible?

Finally, on the lockscreen, the text and gmail badge counts work (incidentally, the gmail does NOT work with the new update Google rolled out for gmail…you have to leave the new tab feature disabled for it to continue working…a problem with UCCW?), but the phone/missed call badge does not work. Did I miss a step to get it working?

I’m on an HTC One, BTW. Otherwise I absolutely LOVE this “skin”…perfect for my needs. Great work!

  141. Posted 2013/06/12 at 6:52 pm | Permalink

Thanks for the great tutorial! This is my first attempt in customizing my home screen with custom widgets and here is the result –

I had to edit the layout of the widgets, squares and icons. However, I was not able to insert the toggles widget. The grid size did not fit at all. But I will keep playing with though :)

  142. Posted 2013/06/12 at 9:40 pm | Permalink

@BigPotato1963 Hi BigPotato, I have a suggestion. ssLauncher doesn’t have a grid, so you can drag icons and apps anywhere you want with precision. Maybe try this homescreen custom fitted to ssLauncher?

  143. Posted 2013/06/13 at 4:59 pm | Permalink

@BadBrad Hi Brad, one small tip – you can always swipe two fingers up to bring Nova settings in your home screens. You don’t need to add another extra screen and double tap :)

  144. Posted 2013/06/13 at 7:30 pm | Permalink

@mbrown3 Thank you. My answers are below your questions.

Q: I can’t get the “badge icons” working. Is there something I’m missing to get those enabled? I expected the phone, email and text ones, particularly, to show how many new/missed. But none of them are doing that.
A: You just need to go into your Nova settings/ Unread counts and make sure you have TeslaUnread turned on and installed. It’s free.

Q: Also re: the main screen, is there a way to just duplicate the main screen?
A: Not that I know of. I have also wished for this. But you can re-add the widgets in for any additional page you create.

Q: For the battery bar across the top, is there a way to get it to change colors based on activity? What I mean is, I’d like to have it green above 60% charge, yellow between 30 and 60%, and red under 30%. Or, at the very least, green above 40% and red below 40%. I’d also LOVE to have it a totally different color while it’s plugged in/charging. Is any of this possible?
A: Unfortunately Zooper widget doesn;t support this type of functionality like UCCW does, so I haven’t been able to do this either. If anyone knows of a way then please let me know.

Q: On the lockscreen, the text and gmail badge counts work (incidentally, the gmail does NOT work with the new update Google rolled out for gmail…you have to leave the new tab feature disabled for it to continue working…a problem with UCCW?), but the phone/missed call badge does not work. Did I miss a step to get it working?
A: Make sure that you have followed the instruction on linking your Gmail account properly to the badge. Go into the settings and select the Gmail item. scrol over to the right until you see account. click that and assign your GMail account to it.

I’m on an HTC One, BTW. Otherwise I absolutely LOVE this “skin”…perfect for my needs. Great work!

A: Glad you like it. I did a rework for the HTC One which is in the setup files so check that out if you haven’t already. The layout is slightly different compared to the Nexus 4.

Thanks for the help getting this set up. I’ve had it up and running for a bit now and so far it’s been working great. However, this afternoon it suddenly got really wonky. It looks like the “background” piece somehow got misaligned. It feels like it should be stretched downward, but it can’t because the dock blocks it. Not sure why it did this all of a sudden. Nothing changed, as far as I can tell. Any ideas?

  153. Posted 2013/07/03 at 10:39 pm | Permalink

@mbrown3 That’s an easy one. All that happened is you probably held the widget and shifted it up so it’s just out of place in the grid. Just hold down and drag it down. Or select resize and move the top and bottom down one grid space. Looks great Btw.

  154. Posted 2013/07/03 at 11:51 pm | Permalink

Yeah, I tried that, but it won’t line up no matter what I do. It won’t let me resize, as it’s already “snapped” to the grid. And I can’t move it because it’s already at the max size. I could micro-adjust all of the rectangles and text, but I’m not sure why it was all perfectly lined up and working up until now.

@mbrown3 After you move it you need to tap on the other widget to open it up then go back and it should resize. You could also just delete it and re-add the widget from the saved list in Zooper widget.

Sorry, not sure what you mean…what other widget? I’ve customized it quite a bit, so if I delete and re-add, I have to re-do all of that, no? That’s what I’ve been trying to avoid, but I may have to go that route. So weird.

@mbrown3 No you ca save your Zooper widget. Just open it like you would edit it and tap the little save icon in the top right. You can then re-import it.

@skuzzzzy Each phones grid patterns can be slightly different. This requires you to adjust the tiles to fit your phones grid within Zooper widget. It really isn’t that hard once you get into it. I posted some info above to @micmars the on May 28. I went over the best way to setup your grid. Keep in mind that you will need to make your tiles taller or wider depending on how the icons are placed on the screen.

OK, I think I figured out my issue. Actually, I didn’t figure it out, but I got it fixed. I saved my Zooper widget, then tried to re-add it. It took about 20 times (seriously). Sometimes it would tell me “no more room on the home screen” when I tried to re-add the widget. Other times it would add it but cut off the top and bottom (like the content was zoomed in but you couldn’t see the top and bottom through the “frame”). Other times it would add it to look exactly the same as it did before. Finally one time when I re-added it, it came back fine. I think I added the widget to the screen, then resized it BEFORE I hit the little hand to restore widget, so maybe that had something to do with it. I think I tried to do that before and it didn’t work, but I know several of the times I had tried restoring the widget and then resizing, and that never worked. Anyway, it’s back now (finally!). Thanks for the help.

Another question, not specific to this skin, etc. Since I’m relatively new to Android, is there a way to save like a snapshot of your system so if I run into something like this again, I can just restore everything and get it back the way it’s supposed to be?

@mbrown3 Glad it finally worked out. I have had a few issues adding widgets in the past too but nothing like that!

There is no way to mirror your system as a complete backup but you can do a backup in Nova which allows you to restore it like when you restored my files. You just go to the same spot where you restored my backup. But you just select backup of instead of restore. This will allow you to just select the widgets you’ve saved.

@skuzzzzy looks like you sorted out the grid. As for the brightness, are they the same wallpaper?

First: Love both the layout and the lock screen i have both setup perfectly and all my android and apple buddys always ask about it.

Second: I keep accidentally dragging the layouts to other screens is there a way to lock every in place so it cant be dragged?

I have copied the files over to internal storage as well as putting the contents of the ZooperWidget folder on my SD card. Despite this, when I try to restore any of the widgets, none show up in the list. I d/l the files multiple times to no avail. I love this setup and am hoping someone can help me figure out why I can see the files from the list even though my file browser shows them there.

Hi Brad! I gave my phone the Symmetry experience a couple of weeks ago, and I’m seriously loving it. It’s really well designed, and I love how clean my phone looks and feels. My question is about making changes with Zooper. I’ve got a Galaxy S4, so I had to tweak the settings to get the boxes in the right place. My problem is this: When I start editing a widget in Zooper, the preview screen doesn’t show icons. I understand why it wouldn’t show them, because the app probably isn’t designed with home screens in mind, but it’s pretty tedious to make adjustments and then go back to the desktop to eyeball the changes. Are you aware of any kind of toggle options to show icons or a lined grid, or something to that effect? Thanks for the help, and thanks for the great designs!

@ExArmySgt Apparently this is a KitKat issue. All files (yes, ALL…all Zooper files, not all Symmetry files) must now be in the Templates folder within the Zooper folder. It will look there, and there is no way to force it to look elsewhere. Try that…it worked for me.

@Envain There is a new(er) option in Nova settings…under Desktop, the very bottom entry is, “Lock Desktop”. It’s kind of a pain because it doesn’t just lock the widgets and wallpaper, it locks everything…so if you want to simply move an app icon or put it into a folder, you have to unlock it first. But until they allow customizable locking, it works for preventing widgets from being accidentally moved.
