Minimal 4-pages skin, with ParanoidAndroid-like Popup Pies.
Credits go to SeriouslyCrazy for the icons, Spiderflyapps for the icon font, SilverDub, it0303@XDA and Deadnight.Warrior for helping me with the guide.
1280×720 devices –
1920×1080 devices –
Fonts –
Icons –
- Nova Launcher (Free or Paid)
- Popup Widget (Paid Version is mandatory)
- Media Utilities
- Zooper Widget Pro
- Nova Launcher settings: 10×8 grid, NO horizontal or vertical margins, hide dock and hide status bar
- Popup Widget settings: full screen
- Media Utilities settings: Blank MetaData when paused, Zooper, use alternative data collection (may not be needed), attempt direct control (may not be needed), make coverart available
- Download the fonts from the above site
Unzip the packages and put:
- ZW files in /sdcard/ZooperWidget/Templates
- iconback.png in /sdcard/ZooperWidget/Bitmaps
- Widgets.db in /sdcard/PopupWidget_backup (if you don’t have this folder create it)
- Dev-icons-1.ttf and Dev-icons-2.ttf in /sdcard/ZooperWidget/Fonts
- Create 4 pages in your desktop
- Put a Zooper Widget in every page (the initial size doesn’t matter, even 1×1)
- Enlarge them until they cover the full screen
- Tap each of them, select SD Card and load in this order Home, Media Player, Weather and Calendar
- If you want, you can already set the widget action to “disabled”, so you don’t enter the configuration every time you tap.
- Go into “layout” and find the modules named “phone”, “contacts”, “sms” square. Edit their action and set a shortcut to the correct app (unless you’re italian, same as me)
- Open Popup Widget
- Tap on restore, you’ll see lots of new widgets with a question mark as icon
- Tap on the wrench of each of them and suddenly go back, you’ll see a Zooper icon in place of the question mark
- Finish the list until all the widgets have a Zooper icon, then exit Popup Widget
Tap on:
- Top circle for top pie
- Center of the clock for central pie
- Down circle for down pie
- As soon as you tap, a black square will come out, tap on it, SD card and load the appropriate pie (you can’t miss it)
- You can already set the widget action to “disabled” so it doesn’t open the configuration every time you tap on it
- FOR 720X1280 DEVICES: if something in the pies size/position seems a bit wrong, check the scaling of every widget and set it to 100%
Repeat the same process for every pie in every page, remembering that:
- Media Player doesn’t have a top pie
- Media Player pies can be popped only when something is playing, so you’ll have to listen a song to be able to configure them
- FOR NON SAMSUNG USERS: Calendar top pie’s alarm icon has a shortcut to samsung alarm. You’ll have to reset its action (look per a text module with a single letter)
- This skin drains a lot of RAM, around 70mb
- It may happen that a page disappears, usually the fixes are (in order): remove CPU from the battery saving, use a task killer, reboot Nova, reboot device.
- The above solution works also if the media player doesn’t update when you tap play button
- If screens continue to disappear after all this stuff, i’m afraid it’s due to your device (i have an unrooted Galaxy S4 with stock firmware).

  1. 1. Everything in description.

    Thanks a lot

Easily one of the best, most innovative homescreens I’ve seen. Added to follow list.

  5. Posted 2013/09/05 at 4:02 pm | Permalink

UPDATE: new calendar central pie. Now it will only display pie pieces if there are events. No more blank fields!
Simply put it in ZooperWidget/Templates. Overwrite when prompted. Enter Calendar Central Pie configuration and load the new template.
When you add or delete a new event in your calendar, it will take about 1 minute for ZW to recognize it.

Wow! Way to think outside the box. You owned this one. Great UI. Not merely a skin. Kewell up the great work.

@Peachanan; Now that’s one awesome HS on Your website!!
Do a video tutorial plzzzzzzzzz :-)

  8. Posted 2013/09/06 at 2:21 am | Permalink

@Gasti89 This is just BRILLIANT !! However, while I am configuring the homepage, I can’t find any module named as ““xxx pie square” and hence, I cant setup an action on it.
I can only see either Progress Bar, Rect, Text and certain values against them but no “xxx pie square”

    Am I doing anything wrong?

EDIT: – My bad, Had to update Zooper Pro :P

@apahlavan1 I suck at English speaking… And I suck at video editing :P if someone wants to make one I’d be pleased!
By the way once you understand pop-ups it’s very easy to understand

i’m so in love with this one, but i can’t get it to work :))) i hope, someone can make a tutorial :)

@r00t07: he tutorial is in the description. Is there something you don’t understand?

  14. Posted 2013/09/07 at 3:25 pm | Permalink

@Gasti89 is there an easier way than here to contact you cause I have a few questions about the tutorial

  15. Posted 2013/09/07 at 4:30 pm | Permalink

@Gasti89 I can’t get the top and down pie to aligne correctly. I use the same custom positions as you do and it’s not working. I have a galaxy s3 and put my grid at 6×4…tried different custom positions..still not working :/

  16. Posted 2013/09/07 at 7:29 pm | Permalink

@SilverDub: try going in popup widget, configure a random widget and resize it manually (not by entering the size, but by dragging the edges) until it take the whole area (try to make it kiss the borders). Then tap on it, the size you see is the max size of your screen.
Now you have to divide for the number of Nova squares (4 for x and 6 for y) and multiply for the number of squares you want to put the widget in, remembering popup widget considers as 0 the top left corner.
    Example: top pie size–> x=max size/4*2 – y=maxsize/6*2
    top pie position—> x=maxsize/4*1 – y=0

  18. Posted 2013/09/08 at 11:11 am | Permalink

Great UI. Want to put it on my Galaxy S3 but dimensions and sizes explained in description are way out for S3.

  19. Posted 2013/09/08 at 12:35 pm | Permalink

When i click on any of the circels, my popup-widget opens up on another EMPTy screen.. I tried to change the size and the position, nothing helps..
Ive got a Samsung note 2. Please help!

  20. Posted 2013/09/08 at 1:55 pm | Permalink

@GaaTY I’ll post the Popup widget values for S3 shortly.

@Dottemannen Do you mean the main widget disappears and you only see the wallpaper?

  21. Posted 2013/09/08 at 2:06 pm | Permalink

The popup shows on a enirely new page. The mainwidget are not showing at all..

  22. Posted 2013/09/08 at 2:33 pm | Permalink

@Dottemannen Probably it isn’t a new page, it’s just the main widget disappearing due to heavy ram usage. Happens to me too sometimes. Usually a Nova reboot or device reboot corrects the issue.

  23. Posted 2013/09/09 at 4:52 pm | Permalink

So after a couple of hours I finally got this working good on an HTC One. I couldn’t get the top pie popup aligned properly even though the position values were correct. Turns out that you actually need the paid version of popup widget, otherwise the top popup will block the ad, and because of that it will be pushed down and misaligned.
Would also like to add that if you expand a pie and press it again, the config for that pie will show up. You can change Widget OnTap Action to disabled and then just config it from the app drawer if you need to, its so annoying that it pops up when I press more than once on a pie.
Lastly, the shortcuts for phone, messaging etc are configured for italian (maybe? just guessing) so “Telefono” does nothing on my device. Had to reconfigure it to Phone etc. Might be worth mentioning if you edit your guide.

  24. Posted 2013/09/09 at 5:41 pm | Permalink

@it0303 Wow! Thanks man, i’m messaging with a guy that has the same top pie issue. I guess he has the free version and a ad block?
About the “disable” thing, didn’t think about mentioning it, will add it in the new guide i’m preparing.
Finally, i thought that apps like dialer, messages, etc. as system apps would follow the device language. Thanks so much!

  25. Posted 2013/09/10 at 3:05 am | Permalink

    - Nova grid is now 10×8 so 720×1280 devices can set the pies without little offsets
    - Home top pie now displays only the date in 4 pieces
    - Weather top pie enlarged, now it displays also humidity and wind speed
    - Weather central pie enlarged, I’m italian and “partly cloudy” is translated “parzialmente nuvoloso”, so i needed another ring :P. Make a backup of Weather Central, so if you don’t like the new layout you can roll back.
    - Weather down pie reduce to only location.
    - The top left icons in the status bar now show an exclamation mark when cellular signal is “E” (roaming) or “None” and a plane when in flight mode.
    - New easier guide with Popup Widget restore feature.

Can you fix the download links (dropbox). They are down :(

  27. Posted 2013/09/10 at 4:02 am | Permalink

@p0nc Fixed, i don’t know why the x in 1920×1080 gets different when copy-pasting and scraps the link O.O

    TY :)

  29. Posted 2013/09/10 at 9:39 am | Permalink

This link below is not working :(

Many thanks, very clear guide and all is working well, expect the central pie of Agenda

And i love your wallpaper, where can i find it?

  30. Posted 2013/09/10 at 2:18 pm | Permalink

That link was for the old version, now that calendar is bundled in the main download.

What’s not working in the calendar central pie?

Wallpaper is sunbeam live wallpaper, free on play store.

What is the aspect menu? I can’t figure out how to re program the icons at the bottom, making this screen un-usable to me at the moment

  35. Posted 2013/09/11 at 4:14 pm | Permalink

Zooper Widget -> Configuration -> select any main widget -> layout

  36. Posted 2013/09/12 at 7:20 pm | Permalink

after i load and enlarge the home screen..etc…. i tap and open the widget to load the modules but no “xxx pie square” is on list. i downloaded and re downloaded all the files still same result.

if i select add, it just gives basic list of “text” “rich text” “rect” “series” “scalable icon set” “bitmap icon set” “progress bar” and “bitmap”

  37. Posted 2013/09/12 at 10:28 pm | Permalink

@lnchmny Bro, first of all you need to check if it’s latest version of Zooper Pro or not. The problem that you are stating, it happens in old versions. Check for version 2.40 (If I remember it correctly).

After that, load the widget and check for “Layout” and under layout, you will see:
    1. Central Pie Square
    2. Down Pie Square
    3. Top Pie Square

I hope this answers your query.

P.S.- However, on a second thought, After @Gasti89 has give new links, you dont even have to edit that setting in Zooper Pro as Popup Widgets are already aligned. Isn’t it?

  38. Posted 2013/09/13 at 12:54 am | Permalink

@lnchmny I think you misunderstood what the modules are. When you tap and select SD you load a WIDGET. Then you tap and the widget, select layout and you find all the MODULES composing that widget…

  39. Posted 2013/09/14 at 2:33 pm | Permalink

Great screen. This was the first one that did and it worked out…for the most part. I’ve got a small issues with icons. I’ve got a V where the phone should be, a Z where the contacts are, an i where the SMS messages are, and a 2 where the app launcher is. There are others, but those are the ones that I could use a little help figuring out how to put the correct icon on.

  40. Posted 2013/09/14 at 8:18 pm | Permalink

@pcs2394 sounds like you haven’t put the icon font from description in the right place, or that zooper didn’t recognize it. Go into configuration -> for all the main screens look for the text modules containing the letters you talk about. Edit the font and select android-dev-icons-1 or 2. You should see that your letters become icons.

  41. Posted 2013/09/14 at 10:53 pm | Permalink

@Gasti89 Thanks for the pointer. Also turned out that I grabbed the wrong icon pack. Got it all sorted out and looks awesome!

  42. Posted 2013/09/15 at 4:02 am | Permalink

Thank you very much for the tutorial~

  44. Posted 2013/10/15 at 3:46 am | Permalink

    Sometime help me with this?
I’ve changed the x and y axis of both the pop up and the widget, please help. This crap won’t work right. Lies are supposed to be around circles not floating

And center thing overlaps clock and is really blurry….

  45. Posted 2013/10/15 at 3:50 am | Permalink

    Your device?

  46. Posted 2013/10/15 at 3:59 am | Permalink

Looking at your screen, you have the old version. Delete everything, redownload all the stuff from this page and follow the tutorial step by step. Then report back.

  47. Posted 2013/10/15 at 5:39 am | Permalink

Can someone post what was done to fix the dang way offset pies on an s3?

  48. Posted 2013/10/15 at 5:42 am | Permalink

I made the above tutorial with the help of two guys (one with a s3 and one with a note2, so same resolution) and they didn’t have any problems. Be sure you have all the required stuff (like for example paid version on Popup Widget), that the downloads are ok and that you followed every step of the tutorial.

  49. Posted 2013/10/15 at 2:22 pm | Permalink

I’ve got paid paid nova, paid popup, paid zooper, played with resolutions and as seen in the images these things are horribly off. Can either of these guys chime in here? Also set grid to 10×8

  50. Posted 2013/10/16 at 3:32 am | Permalink

As i already said, looking at your screenshots you have an old version of the files. Please download the updated files in the description, otherwise nobody here can help you.
